What an oncologist does
An oncologist deals with tumors: they clarify the diagnosis after tests, plan treatment together with surgeons, chemotherapy and radiation specialists, and follow the patient afterwards. People usually come to an oncologist when another doctor — a general practitioner, gynecologist or breast specialist — has seen changes on an ultrasound, a scan or in test results. If you have found a breast lump, a changing mole or a swollen lymph node yourself, start with a breast specialist, dermatologist or general practitioner. Bring all reports, scans on disc and any biopsy slides or blocks.
Frequently asked questions
Which Yerevan clinics and cancer centers have oncologists?
The oncologists in this list see patients at 31 clinics and hospitals. The ones with the most oncologists: National Center of Oncology named after V. A. Fanarjian (47), "Yeolyan" Hematology and Oncology Center of MoH of RA (17), and Dclinic Group (16).
A lump in the breast — breast specialist or oncologist?
Start with a breast specialist (mammologist) or a gynecologist: they will examine the breast and decide whether an ultrasound, a mammogram or other tests are needed. Any lump should be shown to a doctor, even a painless one, although according to the WHO most breast lumps are not cancer. Patients are usually referred to an oncologist once the tests show that an oncologist’s opinion is needed.
Gynecologic oncologist, surgical oncologist, chemotherapist — are they listed among oncologists?
Yes: gynecologic oncologists, surgical oncologists, chemotherapy specialists and pediatric oncologists — as clinics title these posts — are part of this list and have no lists of their own. Radiation oncologists and breast specialists have separate lists, and blood diseases are handled by hematologists; clinics list some doctors under two specialties at once.
Can I see an oncologist without a referral?
Yes, if you pay yourself: private clinics in Yerevan let you book directly. For the state health insurance to pay, you need a referral from the family doctor or therapist (general practitioner) you are registered with: without the required referral, the service is provided on a paid basis, except in emergency or urgent cases. You can also go without a referral for a chronic condition if your family doctor has already made the diagnosis.
Which oncologists see patients in Russian or English?
Consultation languages are listed for 10 of the 153 oncologists in this list: Russian for 10 and English for 9. The “Consultation language” filter shows oncologists by language; for the others, check with the clinic.
About this list
This list covers doctors whom Yerevan clinics name on their own websites: currently 153 doctors from 31 clinics. The list is incomplete and keeps growing; each card leads to a page with the practice location and the clinic’s phone number. There are no such doctors from other Armenian cities in the directory yet.
The districts with the most doctors on this list are Kanaker-Zeytun (78), Kentron (22), and Ajapnyak (21). The list includes 85 women and 65 men — you can choose with the “Gender” filter.
Cards where the clinic lists experience, education or a consultation price come first, then the rest. Within each group, cards with a photo come first. This is not a ranking: places in the list are not for sale. How we collect and check information
Doctors of related specialties are in the list above. Ask the clinic about the cost of a consultation: some clinics have their price list on their Medaro page.
Medaro is a directory: we do not make diagnoses or recommend a particular doctor. Information about doctors comes from clinic websites; before your visit, check the appointment and the cost with the clinic.
